The idea of sitting down for dinner with a 300-pound bear is enough to put most people off their food. But this Russian couple has gone far beyond that – they’ve shared their home with a grizzly lodger for 23 years.
Svetlana and Yuriy Panteleenko adopted the bear named Stepan when he was aged just three months. The big mammal standing at a height of more than 2 meters is so domesticated and gentle that he has become one of the family.
He would sit down to eat dinner with the couple at their table, or snuggle down with them to watch TV in the evenings.
Preparing food for their surrogate child is no small feat, as Stepan can easily chow down on around 25kg of fish, vegetables and eggs every day.
Fortunately, Stepan’s active lifestyle keeps him fit. He burns off his impressive intake by playing football with his owners, or helping out around the garden – it turns out that he has a knack for watering plants.
